The idea

All of it is public and none of it is usable: asset declarations in one registry, voting records in another, manifestos in a third, polling somewhere else again. Nobody cross-references four sources for 1434 people before voting.

So it was joined once, properly, and put behind a search box. The site argues nothing. The homepage says so: mēs rādām datus, secinājumus izdari tu. We show the data, you draw the conclusions.

The deputats.lv homepage: a royal blue page headed 'Kam pieder nauda. Kas strādā. Ko viņi sola.' with a ticker of candidate balances.
Who owns the money. Who works. What they promise.

The counting method sits under the numbers it produced.

01

Four sources, one method

Asset declarations from the CVK, sitting and voting records from the Saeima's open data, polling from SKDS. The arithmetic is printed on the page: balance is cash plus savings plus securities plus shares plus loans issued, minus debts. Property and cars carry no declared value, so they count as units, not euros.

Full-screen blue slide labelled 'Stāsts 1/3' with the figure 63.3%: the share of candidates declaring zero euros or debts. A barcode-style chart of all 1434 candidates: red stripes for debts on the left, white stripes for assets on the right, with a hover tooltip.
One number per screen. Then all 1434 as stripes: debts red, assets white, log scale.

02

The findings lead

Three full-screen slides open the site, because a search box on its own persuades nobody. 63.3% of candidates declare zero euros or only debts. 31 people hold half of all money declared. Total debt runs to €32.21m, against €25.42m in savings.

The dossier drawer. Deep-linkable, with previous and next.

03

The file itself

A searchable index by name, company, employer, even car make, filtered by district, employment, status and education. Each row opens a dossier: declared balance, what it is made of, a plain biography. Below that, what the 89 incumbents did with the last four years: 297 sittings, 7781 recorded votes, 5768 speeches. Two never took the podium.

The whole site, top to bottom.

The ballot step: 14 parties at left, a replica paper ballot with 43 candidates in the centre, and a party information panel at right. The downloadable cheat sheet: a portrait image of the filled ballot with 43 names in two columns and a diagonal SIMULĀCIJA watermark.

balso.deputats.lv

The companion piece started with a simple question: can the real voting ritual be rehearsed without turning it into another generic online poll? Pick your district, choose a list, mark pluses and strike-outs on a faithful replica of the paper ballot, then drop it into a digital ballot box. Any candidate name opens their dossier.

You can download the filled ballot as a PNG and take it to the polling station on 3 October. It is watermarked SIMULĀCIJA so it cannot be mistaken for the real thing. To keep voting friction low without logins, cookies or IP-based identity, I used a dedicated eSIM as the verification layer: send an SMS, a script registers the incoming number, stores only a one-way cryptographic fingerprint, and confirms one vote per number per week.

Patika? Uzbaro autoru. Like it? Fatten the author. €5 is lunch.

05

Even the donation button needed an idea

I don't like dead parts of products. A donation form is usually one of them.

So instead of a row of amounts and a payment button, I made myself the interface. The more you choose to donate, the fatter I get. €5 buys me a snack. Keep dragging and apparently you're funding a lifestyle.

It does absolutely nothing to make the payment system work better. It just makes a boring moment worth playing with, which, to me, is part of making the product work.

The result

Both sites are live ahead of the election on 3 October 2026.
